Writer's Stories - female criminals part one

 Female Criminals & Detectives…

A detective and a criminal have a relationship but not a pretty one. A detective is someone who investigates a crime. A detective can be a private one hired by private person or a police official having the authority to investigate a crime.
What constitutes a crime? If you beat someone up, is that a crime? Are there any elements attached to it that need to be fulfilled? A crime is actually an act that has a motive behind it to commit or omit something that is punishable by law. To constitute a crime, there are two elements that need to be fulfilled; Mens Rea and Actus Reus. Mens Rea is the intention or the motive behind doing the act whereas Actus Reus is that act. If any of these two are absent then it is not a crime.

Confused? Here is an example; if a lady went to visit her boyfriend with an intention to kill him but she did not. In this situation, the Mens Rea was present but she did not act. Similarly, if you commit an act without any intention or hidden motive then that cannot be passed as crime either.
In the 18thand 19thcentury, women used to be convicted for crimes more often compared to today. The number of female criminals is dwindling at an enormous rate compared to the past history.
According to some criminologists and historians, women used to be more crime intended and used to commit 45% of the crimes in the 17thcentury. The reason the number of female criminals is declining can be caused by domestication or jobs of the women, also society and policies have changed.
In the start of the 20thcentury, female criminals were assessed for any mental disorder or tension, most of the women were reassessed to have mental disorder instead of a criminal intent.

The Lyme Regis Murders

Andrew Segal

Three little piggies going to market each,
Changed their minds, went down to the beach.

A great big rock then cracked each head,
And, left the three of them, all stone dead.   R.A.

Three found dead, throwing a quiet seaside town into turmoil.
The shoreline was deserted apart from the four individuals cavorting close to the water’s edge.   A single gull wheeled overhead screaming out what might have been a warning, had anyone understood, or been prepared to listen. Offshore the swell rose and fell ominously, a restless movement like the bulk of a heaving whale, as it too whispered a plea for mercy.

"Last week I took a short break and I packed your book. I had plenty of reading time, but frankly I did not need it, as once I had an uninterrupted session I quickly got into this riveting story. What a good read." -Brendan Roodt

 Female Detectives

There have also been many famous female detectives who played their roles in solving crime mysteries. Here are some examples…

Kiran Bedi

Kiran Bedi is a great example, she was not quite satisfied being a tennis player and a champion at that, a passionate politician and vehement social activist, she also helped in serving the police, she was the first officer in the history of the Indian Police Force. She set up different civilian volunteer groups that used to petrol the areas of Delhi that the police alone could not cover, she was successful in stopping sexual assault and institutional corruption.

Maud West

Another great example of female detectives is Maud West, she was a well-known private detective in London in the early 20thcentury. She started her agency in 1905 and hired detectives from both genders. She investigated many crimes in the prime of her agency; blackmails and theft, cheating spouses and even found the German spies. According to her, she had investigated cases all over the world; Paris, the South of France, Monte Carlo, New York and Niarobi.

Queens Of Crime…

The following are the stories of some of the most notorious female criminals in the history, you will be amazed at what they did!

Elizabeth Bathory:

Elizabeth Bathory used her wealth and influence on women to torture those who she thought to be beneath her and not of her standard, according to the History Channel.  Bathory belonged to a noble family in Hungary which held a prominent position in the society. She married into another family when she was married to Count Ferencz Nadasdy in 1575, thus getting her name Countess Elizabeth Bathory.
She had convinced her husband to build a torture chamber for her in the castle she shared with him. It is said that she had killed over 600 girls that aged between 10 and 14 years. She used to punch needles and jamming pins under the nails of the girls, to tie them down, cover their bodies with honey, and left them there open to ants and bees.
She used her position to stay away from prison but only until 1610, she stopped killing unknown girls and went after the daughter of the nobles. She was convicted for 80 murders in 1611 and she was restricted to a room of the castle that only had slits in the walls for food and fresh air. She did not last long, she died in 1614.

Andrea Yates:

Talking about the life story of Andrea Yates, a woman who belong to Houston not an ordinary lady but the one who was accused of killing her own five children. You read that right, she killed her very own five children. This incident is one of its kind, and this is the only reason that this incident grabbed the attention of the whole America back in the year 2001.
Yates methodically drowned all of her five children one after another and it only took her one hour to kill all of her own kids, this was reported by Time. If you are wondering then the youngest of them five children were only 6 months old, and the elder one was 7 years old
The first trial took place back in the year 2002 that resulted in Yate's conviction. She was convicted of two counts of capital murder, but as she went for appeals court that later reversed this decision given in her first trial. The decision was reversed on the basis of the fact that she was not guilty of the crime because she is insane and her mental condition made her do that. This decision states that her intention was not to kill her own children, but her mental state made her do this. The decision was given in her second trial that took place in 2006.  Yates will be likely to spend her life in a mental asylum in Texas, due to her insanity.
