“I know I am but summer to your heart,
And not the full four seasons of the year.”
–Edna St. Vincent

When people think of love, they imagine an eternity spent with the person they cherish. Love is defined as the promise of loyalty and hard work for the relationship. However, not everyone is fortunate enough to experience a love that offers them satisfaction with the one person they are with. There are many people who also experience infidelity from their partners. Usually, it happens when one partner is not satisfied with the person they are with and tend to seek affairs with others secretly. On the other hand, there is the concept of polygamy that has been carried on through years. According to many people, men simply cannot be with one woman and justify the concept of having more than one partner without hiding their affairs. Although polygamy can be a preference of all the genders, it is usually men who are in polygamous relationships especially due to the permission given to men by many religions and cultures.

In the fifteenth century, King Henry VIII was well-known for his polygamous tendencies as he had six wives. However, only three of them were considered his official wives due to the annulment of the remaining marriages. King Henry VIII was a man with a passion for affairs and he simply could not remain loyal to one woman despite his excessive desire for them. Charles II is also a great example of English kings who were hailed as womanizers of their times. He had almost 13 mistresses besides his wife Catherine of Braganza. The successor of Charles II was his own brother James II who was equally notorious for his extravaganza need to have mistresses that defied the standards of beauty. He had eleven mistresses and ended up marrying one of them too; Anne Hyde.

Another example of infidelity is Edward VIII who fell in love with a woman named Wallis Simpson. Although Edward VIII only ever had many mistresses, his love for Wallis was so strong that he married her, stepping down from his throne to become the Duke of Windsor. In other words, the Kingdom of England has seen infidelity in many colors. It is in Edward VIII’s case that polygamy is the most visible due to the fact that he did not hide his affairs or made the effort to like other English monarchs. However, the line of infidelity and polygamy did not just end with the monarchy.

Celebrity Stories on Infidelity & Polygamy

There are many famous celebrities who claim to be in open marriages and polygamy.

Ashton Kutcher
One such person is Ashton Kutcher who was married to Demi Moore. The reason for their divorce, according to Moore, was their open marriage. On the other hand, Kutcher claims that his relationship with other women did not dim his love for his wife.
He did not deny his extra-marital affairs and neither did he say he had stopped loving his wife. This type of confusion portrays a dark side of love and shows us that it is not all black and white.

Brian Austin
Another interesting example is of Brian Austin and the gorgeous Megan Fox. In their relationship, it is Megan Fox who is allowed to have the polygamous relationships and she enjoys her open relationship as well.

On the other hand, her partner completely trusts her and does not feel the need to have multiple partners as Fox. Theirs might be one of the most successful examples of an open marriage.

Beyoncé
Who is not familiar with Beyoncé and Jay-Z! Recently, Beyoncé shared with the world that her partner had been cheating on her. Although they were to have equal parts fun in this relationship, Jay-Z ended up cheating on her many times but she has forgiven him for the sake of their marriage.

This is another complicated marriage which makes you question the extent of the kindness and complexity of the feeling called love.

When it comes to history, we can find so many stories about infidelity and love that it is almost uncanny that human beings have never figured out why it is prevalent and why some people prefer multiple partners.

Mary Shelley

For instance, Mary Shelley and Percy Bysshe Shelley had a love story which captures the essence of Romanticism in England. Despite their strong feelings for each other, they never married each other and lived in an open relationship.
They shared a polyandrous bond where both partners were allowed to conduct relationships with others. However, this practice could hardly tar their love for each other.

These types of relationship flaws and loopholes are not limited to famous people. One relationship investigator shares how they had to follow around a man who was avoiding going home after the birth of children. In the end, he was found fooling around with young girls and neglecting his wife at home. Obviously, this story did not go well for either of them.

For people who expect loyalty yet never seem to find it, Lawrence Durrell’s words right true,  Gamblers and lovers really play to lose.”
Another real-life story of infidelity is of a man who impregnated two women at the same time who went into labor the same day. And funnily enough, they ended up being across the hall to each other in the same hospital too. The man who was cheating on them kept going back and forth until one of the girl’s friend found out the man’s intentions.
These stories of infidelity are not uncommon in our world. Open marriages or polygamy will only be able to survive if there is trust between two partners to an extent that they don’t need ownership of the other person. However, it is rare that a relationship survives after cheating or infidelity due to the fickle string between two partners. Cheating and infidelity cross the boundary of disrespect and disregard for the partner and you need a huge heart to let go of your partner’s mistake to save the marriage or relationship.
