The romance short story, also known as a novella, revolves around two people (hero and heroine) who develop romantic love for each other and strive to build it into a relationship. Notably, the theme of developing a romantic relationship runs in the story from developing the conflict to the climax of the story.
However, the plot of the story may have some subplots that may not necessarily have a link with the romantic love of the main characters. A good romantic short story should have an ending that is optimistic and emotionally satisfying.
A word from the renowned romantic novelists indicates that in romance novels, there exist good and evil characters whereby the good characters are rewarded while the evil ones are penalised. They also explain that the romantic novels serve the purpose of celebrating those who fall in love, emotions and commitment.
- A romantic story should start with a point of action right from the beginning. It does not waste many words on setting up the scene, internal thought or bringing out the back story.
- It should tell the reader much they need to know and not everything that you know. Whatever they will have will enable them to understand the conflict, goals and motivation of the characters.
- The little information in any romantic story should have a deep description so that the reader can easily visualise how the situations and acts are. Try to be brief in your description but with very evocative words. Let the reader have the real picture of what is happening.
- Dialogue and other physical cues are used in the stories to show how the characters develop a conflict, confront it and ultimately resolve it.
- Normally, the format of a good romantic story is within a very short time: probably a few hours, night, weekend or a few days. This sustains the intensity ad focus of the action.
In a romantic short story, every word does something within the story. There is no wasting of words.

& Short Stories
Unarguably, romance novel writing has grown immensely over the years. It originates from the romantic fictions in the 18th and 19th centuries that traced the path to happiness in marriages of heterosexual white heroines who defied social conventions and overcame personal struggles.
These female protagonists came out successfully to find the loves of their lives hence the novels ended with them securing happy marriages. Two things came out clear in the novels: the development of a romantic relationship and an emotionally satisfying ending. Some of the early romantic novels include the works of Jane Austen and Bronte Sisters.
Later, in the 20th century, romantic novel writing got a boost when more writers came up and introduced new aspects to the industry. Some like Margaret Michell made people follow the historical romance stories as Daphine Du Maurier came up with gothic romance subgenre. Gothic Romance brought in the incidences of horror in the romance genre. It expressed the heroines undergoing serious and terrific ordeals to meet their true loves.
More features popped up in the romantic writing genre as time went by in that, in the 1950s and ‘60s, the female protagonists advanced from just being housewives to having diverse careers. The first same-sex romantic novel came into existence in 1970 by Gordon Merrick but the novels have always gotten a blow since the heterosexual ones have a high demand and have become so successful.
In the 2000s, there has been a paradigm change in romance novels now that the readers are demanding more inclusive representations and diverse stories. We should not fear that they will replace the writings of the pioneers but instead, they are bringing diverse content to the ever-changing audience around the world. the goodness is that both the veteran and newbie romance novel lovers get their respective novels.
