Terrifying Short Stories

Short Horror Stories

Horror stories have grown to be so popular all over the world for both children and adults. This sensational genre translates people to another world and level that makes the hearts to pound, the breathing to escalate and blood to rush. Anybody reading a horror story is bound to experience a thrill and adrenaline rush just like when you ride on a very fast roller coaster.
Other physical and emotional reactions that a reader experiences include chills, cringing, crying, dry mouth, frozenness, hair bristling, heightened alertness, involuntary screaming, and momentary arrest. Muscular contractions, nausea, paralysis, recoiling, shrinking, shuddering, sweating, spine-tingling, trembling, urinating and weak-keed also characterise horror stories.

A horror short story is a genre of fiction that is aimed at instilling fear, dread, repulsion and terror in an audience. Its purpose is to develop horror as it contains supernatural elements like monsters and vampires though some may build from the common fears that people normally have like the fear of spiders.

Unlike other short stories where the main character faces some challenges and overcomes them to learn a lesson, in a horror short story the main character meets their death in their worst fears.

There various types of sub-genres of horror short stories that include:

·   - Gothic – They include stories that specifically focus on death and it combines horror and romanticism.

·  - Paranormal – These involve the ghost stories or the supernatural horror occurrences which even science cannot explain how they occur.

·    - Occult – Consists of some ritual practices that you cannot place them under science or religion.

·   - Dark fantasy – They are horror short stories that tend to blend the fantasy dark elements.

·  - Survival – This one comprises of the main character who tries to survive within the circumstances of the people who hunt them.

·    - Science fiction – These horror stories blend the elements of science fiction.

The main importance of horror short stories is to expose to the readers the deepest nightmares and anxieties that push the limits of the emotions and fear of the people.

Ramsey Campbell
Ramsey Campbell was born in England’s Liverpool city to Alexander Ramsey and Nora Campbell. He studied at St. Edward’s college with the aid of his Christian brothers amid the rift that existed between his parents. Ramsey Campbel is another Liverpool born English horror writer who has written for decades – over 50 years. He first became prominent in the 1960s and has risen to be the finest living British horror writer. Other authors praise his work and draw a lot of inspiration from his work.
Ramsey started his writing work in the year 1957 to 1950 when he was eleven years old with the influence of a certain magazine in Bolton. His first collection was called Ghostly Tales and it consisted of sixteen stories and a poem. His mother encouraged him to write a whole book before sending his work to a publisher by that time. when the work was ready, he contacted many publishers who rejected his work but encouraged him to continue writing. His first work, Juvenilia, was published after thirty years and since then he has done a lot of work for over fifty years now.
Agatha Christie
Funny enough, just like Ramsey Campbell, Agatha Christie also began her writing work at the age of eleven but with just one poem. she used to read so many books as a child to at least give herself basic education before she started writing. When her mother was in her sickbed, she told Christie to write down the stories that the mother said and later she got her poems published. After that, she discovered her writing prowess and she wrote her second book “The Secret Adversary” and other books followed later.

Clive Barker
Clive began his career as a horror writer at an early age. He was born in 1952 in Liverpool, England. His collection of short stories called “Books of Blood” and “The Damnation Game” Novel were his first work in the year 1985. He then engaged into modern-day and urban fantasy writing work and produced a series of horror books including “Weaveworld”, “The Great and Secret Show” among the rest.
Clive’s work, “Book of Blood”, brought him into the limelight as a leading horror writer in mid-1980’s. Since then, he has written a myriad of novels and other works. He is also a film director, playwright and visual artist.

Roald Dahl was one of the victims of the second world war who has a chance to work at the British Embassy where he met various high profile people among them C.S Forester, who was a prominent novelist. Forester was working at the British Mistry of Information where he was writing propaganda for American to consume.
